Patrick Ryan Williams. Ph.D.

Assistant Curator of Anthropology, South American Archaeology, The Field Museum

Dr. Ryan Williams has worked in the South American Andes since 1991 and has been directing research at Cerro Baúl since 1997. He has undertaken major surveys of ancient agricultural works in the Moquegua Valley, where Cerro Baúl is located, including characterizing the agricultural production systems of the Moquegua Tiwanaku settlements.

Dr. Williams’s specialties include GIS and remote sensing, which define the priorities of where to dig and create a spatial database structure for interpreting the finds. He also coordinates the examination of the exchange of ancient materials through the geochemical analysis of their structure.

This will be his fifth season leading the expedition team at Cerro Baúl, where research has focused on understanding the composition of the Wari colony and its institutions of governance. The nature of political interaction between expansive states is a primary focus of this research.

To learn more about Ryan, you can review his Curriculum Vitae (CV).
