Dispatches

Dr. Anne Underhill, Ph.D.

Chair and Gilbert E. and Katharine Phelps Boone Associate Curator, Anthropology

Dr. Anne Underhill specializes in the late prehistoric and early historic periods of northern China. Her main research interests are the development of complex societies, pottery production, and analysis of burials. These topics are included in her recently published book, Craft Production and Social Change in Northern China (Kluwer Academic, New York, 2002).

Anne Underhill has long been fascinated by the important archaeological cultures of ancient Shandong, and she first visited Shandong University on a research trip in 1987. In 1994 after the government of China allowed Sino-foreign collaborative archaeological projects, she and her Shandong University colleagues (Professors Cai, Yu, Luan, and Fang) initiated the regional survey project in the Rizhao area by inviting Dr. Gary Feinman and Linda Nicholas, well known for their expertise in regional survey in Mexico, to join their project. The team has successfully continued the survey for more than a decade and has excavated for three seasons at Liangchengzhen (1999-2001).

To learn more about Anne, you can review her curriculum vitae (CV).
