Archaeology of China
Uncover ancient settlements in Shandong, China, with Field Museum archaeologists Dr. Gary Feinman, Linda Nicholas, Dr. Anne Underhill, and their Chinese colleagues. From 1995 through 2008, these scientists conducted the first full-coverage systematic archaeological survey in the region to learn how prehistoric civilizations grew and changed over time throughout northern China.
Check out Dr. Feinman's Expedition Archives, where you can browse through photos and dispatches describing the team's progress over the years and explore an interactive map that illustrates the archaeological process of surface surveying—collecting and analyzing pottery sherds and other artifacts scattered on the ground to understand the size, scope, and growth of societies throughout history.
