Lions of Tsavo
Go on safari with Field Museum Curator and zoologist Dr. Bruce Patterson to study the maneless lions of Tsavo—two of which were man-eaters immortalized in the 1996 film "The Ghost and the Darkness." For more than a decade, Dr. Patterson and his team members worked to find out why adult males in Tsavo often lack manes, and how lions and humans can peacefully co-exist in Africa.
Check out the 2005 Expedition Archive, where you can read Dr. Patterson's dispatches describing the team's field experiences, view amazing photos of animals from Tsavo National Park, and explore an interactive map containing more images of maneless lions and information about their unusual family life and habits!
