STUDENT PROGRAMS
Below are a few offerings for students that target topics such as DNA sequencing, soil studies, and more. For a complete listing and details about preparing for and scheduling field trips, please view our Field Trip Programs page, where you can download our Student & Educator Program Catalog or sign up for field trips via our Illinois Online Registration Form or Out-of-State Online Registration Form.

Also, take time to explore ideas for activities relating to evolution, genetic sequencing, and more by downloading our DNA Discovery Center Educator Guide. (PDF format, 42pp, 4.7 mb)

Unless otherwise noted, student programs listed in this section are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am–12:30pm, including 30 minutes for lunch. Cost is $4.50/student. Maximum of 35 students.

GRADES K-2

Soil Adventure
Discover how soil scientists study the “ingredients” of soil, and learn why soil is so important to plants and people. Hear about the secrets of “soil recyclers,” see and touch live earthworms, and practice scientific observation skills.
Meets ILS goals 11, 12, 13.

GRADES 6-8

Unraveling DNA
Investigate the fundamental principles of DNA and genetics while learning about the scientific research conducted at The Field Museum. Students will extract DNA in a lab and connect with real scientists in the DNA Discovery Center!
Meets ILS goals 11, 12, 13.

Soil Adventure
Observe, sketch, touch, and analyze your way to a new understanding of the environment and your role in it. With soil as the link between plants, animals and people, students investigate the four “ingredients” of soil and get up close and personal with beetles and earthworms.
Meets ILS goals 11, 12, 13.

GRADES 9-12

Unraveling DNA
Investigate the fundamental principles of DNA and genetics while learning about the scientific research conducted at The Field Museum. Students will extract DNA in a lab and connect with real scientists in the DNA Discovery Center!
Meets ILS goals 11, 12, 13.
