Rio Japurá, Brazil

Meet the belle of the ball, a female Blue-crowned Manakin (Lepidothrix coronata); her species is known for its “leks”—male “dance” competitions designed to win the females’ favor. This is the fourth installment in a series of bird videos by Dr. Jason Weckstein documenting the 2007 joint expedition between The Field Museum and Brazil’s Goeldi Museum to survey Amazonian species along the Rio Japurá and its tributaries.
